Diesel engine exhaust emissions from construction sites can present unique problems due to their high concentration in a small vicinity. This is true for the workers on site, but also for those adjacent to the site. Exposure to diesel exhaust may affect worker health and safety and performance. Proper implementation of controlled measures can help address this problem without compromising efficiency. Most importantly, guaranteed emission reductions are fast becoming an essential component of state and municipal funded contracts.

Fortunately, the harmful components of diesel exhaust; particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrocarbons (HC), are easily reduced with current and readily available technologies which provide immediate emissions reductions and hence immediate health benefits to the local population.

Ward Clean Air Products Limited (WCAP) offers three retrofit solutions designed with construction vehicle in mind; which are both industry leading verified solutions*. In addition, our application engineering approach to your emission control mandate is the difference between a one-size-fits-all solution and a comfortable custom-fit solution insuring quick and easy installations:

1. First is the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), available in two configurations:
a. The AZ Purifier – offering 20-40%* reduction dependent on the vehicle AZ-Purifier_S
b. AZ Purimuffler (a combined AZ Purifier catalyst and silencer solution to enhance the packaging of the DOC solution within the vehicle) AZ-Purimuffler_S_100
2. The second is the Purifilter, a passively regenerating diesel particulate filter (DPF) , which offers extraordinary and industry leading reductions of PM (90%*), HC and CO. ECS retrofit technology solutions offer superior performance at maximum cost effectiveness per retrofit dollar.

3. The third is the Combifilter, an actively regenerated DPF system that typically removes 90+ % of PM* while reducing NO2 emissions. The system is comprised of an integrated DPF and silencer assembly, and an off-board regeneration control panel or station.

a. Depending on the Combifilter™ you choose, simply plug your Combifilter™ equipped vehicle in when you’re on lunch or when the days work is done and your equipment will always be ready for a day’s uninterrupted work.

i. Combifilter™ Type S regenerates or self cleans in 60 to 90 minutes

ii. Combifilter™ Type K regenerates in eight hours or overnight.

These are solutions you can also feel good about, knowing your emission control dollars are serving the environment and the population well with the best verified solution in the industry*. Because particulate exposure increases exponentially with proximity to the source, reducing emissions with these retrofit technologies in the vicinity of people provides critical public health benefits and minimizes a person's exposure to these harmful emissions.

The products offered by Ward Clean Air Products go through a strict testing and validation regime. WCAP holds more product certifications and verifications than our competitors. Letters of evaluation from agencies, testing results, and papers are readily available to our customers.

RETROFIT EMISSION SOLUTIONS

The AZ Purifier is an oxidation catalyst that is installed upstream of the vehicles original muffler into a single integrated package. Exhaust enters the catalyst and the harmful exhaust is chemically and physically modified into harmless air. AZ Purimufflers can be designed to be a direct fit replacement for the manufacturers’ original muffler. This means less down time and less invasive installation. AZ Purimufflers are a quick and efficient way to effectively reduce harmful diesel emissions.

The Purifilter is a diesel particulate filter coated with a catalytic layer. Exhaust enters the filter where the particulate is "trapped". When appropriate temperatures are reached the particulate is "burned". Exhaust comes out clean and the filter continually "regenerates" itself. The Purifilter replaces the current muffler it provides superior noise attenuation that is comparable to high grade mufflers.

The Combifilter is comprised of an integrated diesel particulate filter and silencer in one design and an electrically powered regeneration station. The filter assembly typically removes >90% of the DPM from engine exhaust. The filtered particles are stored in the filter until it is regenerated. Regeneration is typically required on a daily basis either once a work shift or overnight. Because the Combifilter is electrically regenerated there is no concern for adequate vehicle duty cycles or temperature traces.

What Is Diesel Exhaust?

smoke_100Diesel exhaust contains a mixture of thousands of different chemical substances. Many of the components of diesel exhaust, such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxides, hydrocarbon gases and diesel particulate matter (soot), arsenic and benzene, can cause health problems. Diesel exhaust contains 20-100 times more harmful particles than gasoline exhaust.

Health Effects of Diesel Exhaust

Due to expanding use of diesel equipment, more and more workers are exposed to diesel exhaust. More than one million workers are exposed to diesel exhaust and face the risk of adverse health effects, ranging from headaches and nausea to cancer and respiratory disease. Such workers include mine workers, bridge and tunnel workers, railroad workers, loading dock workers, truck drivers, material handling machine operators, farm workers, longshoring employees, and auto, truck and bus maintenance garage workers.
